Zunzi's is good eattin'

My classmates and I like to have lunch together once a week after class. We got into the rut of going to the same place last quarter (Saigon...yum!) so we started to venture out this quarter. We like to call our lunches "New Taste Tuesdays." This week we went to Zunzi's which is a TINY little pick-up/to-go spot with some of the tastiest food Savannah has to offer. They are located at the corner of York and Drayton, right across from SCAD's York Hall. If you didn't know where to look, you'd pass them right by. The yellow awning and flags is the only give away that there's a restaurant behind the double doors. Oh, and when the place is open the line down the block is a dead give away too. Zunzi's reminds me of the Soup Nazi on Seinfeld---only the people are much nicer here. It works like this: you stand in a long line on the sidewalk and inch closer to the doors ever so slowly. When you get to the doors you realize that this is it! Behind the doors is a cafeteria style line that starts on the right and ends about eight feet later when you pay and squeeze your way out the doors with your food. The menu is written on a chalkboard overhead and you better be ready to order when you cross the threshold and make it into the line because there are hungry people waiting their turn and holding up the line is frowned upon. Order and move to the left.

As for Zunzi's menu, it's full of hearty options with South African, Italian, and Dutch references. Homemade sausages are popular as are their salads, meatloaf, and gyros. I can't describe taste of their roasted chicken which is a key ingredient in several dishes. It's so incredibly tender and seasoned with a unique blend of spices that work on top of a green salad or with mashed potatoes.

The people who work at Zunzi's are very friendly and willing to explain all the dishes. If it was not for the lack of parking near Zunzi's I would be a regular here.

Bharathi ordered Oliver's Special. It looks gross, but she said it's really good. It's mashed potatoes topped with chicken, African sausage and Zunzi's "special sauces."
